Animal socks, from the beloved to the deeply unsettling
Animals are the largest weird-sock category by a wide margin, and quality varies more here than anywhere else. At the boring end you get a small embroidered dog on an otherwise normal sock. At the interesting end you get knee-highs with a three-dimensional frog head sitting on top of each foot, staring at everyone in the room.
The genuinely strange animal socks tend to cluster around a few species: frogs, cats, pigeons, sharks, and dinosaurs. There is no obvious reason why these five dominate, but they do, and each has developed its own visual conventions. Frog socks are almost always green and almost always cheerful. Pigeon socks are usually a joke about cities. Shark socks put the mouth at the toe, every time, without exception.
A practical note: socks with sculpted or plush animal features are usually hand-wash-only, and the attachments are the first thing to go in a tumble dryer. If you want something that survives daily wear, a well-made printed design will outlast a novelty 3D one several times over.
