Rude socks, sweary socks, and socks with opinions

An entire industry exists to put mild profanity on the sole of a sock so that it's only visible when you put your feet up. It is a surprisingly refined art form: the joke has to land in about four words, be legible upside down, and stay funny after the twentieth wash.

The best of these are written rather than merely printed — a real line of comedy, usually deadpan, occasionally genuinely mean. The worst are a swear word in a novelty font. You can tell them apart within about two seconds of reading the product photo, which is why we show large images here.

These are the default "I have to buy a gift for someone I know slightly" purchase, and they work because they're low-stakes. A word of warning that people learn the hard way: check exactly where the text sits before gifting. Sole text is a private joke. Text across the ankle is a public statement, and the recipient may not have volunteered for that.

The catalog is catching its breath
